East Coast Classic Set For Cracking Weekend Waves As Forecast Promises Punch

Published on 21/06/2023

SCAMANDER/TASMANIA (Wednesday,21st June,2023): Surfing Tasmania will finish the competitive calendar with a bang this weekend, June 23rd and 24th at the 2023 Quiksilver/Roxy East Coast Classic looms large.

A promising forecast has organisers and athletes alike in a state of froth with 3-4ft waves looking likely for Saturday and Sunday.

Surfing Tasmania’s Events Manager Luke Johannesen is excited to see what the region will produce in the way of waves when the first heat gets underway Saturday morning.

“I’m very optimistic about wave quality going off the current forecast. We have Dark Hollows, South Shelly or Cattle Grids as the three likely locations for the event. In saying that it’s impossible to make a call until we are looking at it Saturday morning so stay tuned for a venue announcement on Surfing Tasmania’s social media,” said Johannesen.

North East Boardriders Club member Benn Richardson knows the east coast better than most, backing Johannesen’s call on the forecast.

“With two metres of swell there will definitely be waves for the weekend. We just need to hope the wind comes to the party, so fingers crossed,” said Richardson.

As the final event on the calendar the East Coast Classic could be the decider when it comes to who’s crowned Tasmanian Surfing Champions across multiple divisions.

The level of surfing will be high with names like Marti Paradisis (Clifton Beach), Dara Penfold ( Lauderdale), Jy Johannesen ( Penguin), Sienna Lawrence ( Clifton Beach) and Matt Gaby ( North West/Burnie) in the draw and ready to lay down some big scores.

Thanks to our fantastic event partners Quiksilver, Roxy, Bay of Fires Bush Retreat, Globe, Harvey Vin and The Surfside Beaumaris.
