SOUTH ARM/TASMANIA (Sunday/January 28th/2024): Mainland Athletes have made it a clean sweep across Senior and Junior Divisions at the 2024 Red Herring Surf Pro-Am in a true reflection of just how quickly Tasmania’s newest Surf Competition has grown.
Boomerang’s Oscar Salt (NSW) beat Taj Air (NSW) in a nail-biting Open Men’s Final (13.8 points to 13.27 points) whilst Phillip Island Boardriders Sarah Seuren(VIC) took out both the Junior and Senior Women’s Titles and a massive three thousand dollars in cash.
Seuren’s superior rail work proved too much in the Women’s Open Final, despite Park Beach’s Luca Brodribb getting painfully close to victory ( 12.67 points to 12.40 points).
Torquay’s Jerry Kelly (14.4 points) shredded his way to Victory against the unlucky Taj Air (11.77 points), Cowan Duncan (10.83 points) and Charlie Gibson (5.56 points). Kelly got off to the best start possible with a four-turn right-hander, the Victorian able to maximise on his backhand to post a 7.90 points. This proved too much for his fellow competitors after he backed that score up with a 6.5-point ride.
Defending Champions Rudy Davis (Clifton Beach) and Dara Penfold (Lauderdale) fell just short of back to back Final appearances, the pair bowing out in the Semi’s ( Davis going down to Salt and Penfold falling short to Seuren).
Matt Kennedy (Cremorne) made the semi finals in the Open Men’s but ran into a red-hot Taj Air who went on to push Salt all the way in the Final.
