Surfing Tasmania’s Women in Waves event brought together women and girls from across the state for a fantastic day of surfing, learning and connection at Clifton Beach.

Blessed with sunshine, warm weather and fun waves, participants enjoyed a welcoming environment designed to build confidence in the ocean and celebrate the growing community of female surfers in Tasmania.

The day featured an Ocean Literacy Session presented by the Resilience Lab, followed by surf coaching from Coastrider Surf Academy, where surfers of all ages and abilities had the opportunity to develop their skills in a supportive setting.

Attendees also enjoyed a local female makers market and the opportunity to connect with Disabled Surfers Tasmania, who hosted an information booth highlighting the important work they do creating surfing opportunities for people of all abilities.

A highlight of the day was the panel discussion facilitated by Surfing Australia’s Shanice Ryder and Surfing Tasmania’s Melanie Hoult. Joining the conversation were Avalon Starick, Lizzie Stokley, Emily Versulys and Dara Penfold, who shared their experiences in surfing and discussed the many ways the sport has shaped their lives both in and out of the water.

Throughout the day, participants formed new friendships, shared experiences and encouraged one another, showcasing the strong and supportive community that exists within women’s surfing in Tasmania.

Surfing Tasmania thanks all participants, presenters, volunteers, stallholders and event partners who helped make the day such a success. We look forward to continuing to create opportunities that inspire more women and girls to get involved in surfing and build confidence in the ocean.
