BRUNY ISLAND/TASMANIA (Monday, June 10th/2024): Initially planned as a lay day, the waves turned up yesterday at Cloudy Bay for the 2024 Bruny Island Classic presented by Red Herring Surf.
Surfing Tasmania opted to run five three-person heats, allowing competitors plenty of opportunity to maximise conditions and push through to the Semi-Finals and Finals of all divisions.
Standouts yesterday included Rudy Davis (Open Men’s,17.17 point heat total), Josie McCann (Open Women’s,10.30 point heat total), Cowan Duncan (Under 18 Boys,16.80 point heat total) and Jessica Gardner (Under 18 Girls,11.13 point heat total).
Today shaped as a better day for weather and waves and it didn’t fail to deliver on the forecast. In the Open Men’s Final, it was the veteran and new Tasmanian State Champion, Dustin Hollick (13.76 points) who came out on top in an extremely tight tussle with Hamish Renwick (13.70 points), Ethan Turner (13.70 points) and Cowan Duncan (7.73 points).
Years of tactical experience paying dividends for Hollick, who is thoroughly enjoying his surfing in 2024.
Sienna Lawrence (10.93 points) proved far too strong for Charlotte Beach (5.23 points) and Josie McCann (3.23 points) whilst Ava Carlton was a finalist but a non-starter.
Lawrence officially wrapped up the 2024 Tasmanian Championship Circuit on top of the Women’s ratings, with Ava Carlton in second. While Rudy Davis made a big jump up the rankings, it wasn’t enough in the end, finishing the season second to Hollick, who won his first state title for over a decade.
