JAKE COLREAVY WINS 2022 GOODSTONE GROUP PHANTOM COAST CLASSIC

Published on 01/10/2022

MARRAWAH/TASMANIA (Saturday 1st October/2022): Wynyard’s Jake Colreavy has won the 2022 Goodstone Group Phantom Coast Classic at Lighthouse Beach, Marrawah today in pulsing overhead surf to get off to the best possible start in this year’s Surfing Tasmania State Championship Series.

Twenty two of the state’s best surfers took on the constantly shifting beach break in the first leg of five Tasmanian Championship Circuit events on the calendar.

Unusually favourable winds kept surface conditions nice and clean for ten hard-fought thirty-minute heats before a forty minute final pitted Colreavy against experienced and in-form campaigners Hamish Renwick, Jy Johannesen and Zebulon Crichlow.

The swell stepped it up another level making things tricky for the final. It was Colreavy’s razor sharp top to bottom rail work proving too much when the final siren sounded as he continued to send himself vertical in the pocket, throwing spray to the heavens as he had done in his previous two heats.

“The final was really hard work and to be honest, more duck diving and lots of paddling than surfing. But the waves were really good leading up to the final so everyone was stoked with the day.”

It’s the second competition Colreavy has won since moving to Tasmania from Queensland late in 2021, winning the 2022 Rip Curl West Coast Classic earlier this year, he’s thinking a full scale assault on the Tasmanian State Title could be on the cards, saying: ” Yeah i guess i might give the other four comps a go and see what happens, it would be nice to get a state title for sure!”

Under a new format for this year’s event, competitors all surfed two heats throughout the morning with their two best waves scored over a combined time of an hour in the lineup. Their best wave was then doubled and then added to their second best score for a final total. The top four surfers then progressed to a forty minute final.
