ROARING BEACH/TASMANIA (Sunday, 23rd April,2023): Roaring Beach today provided fun waves for competitors in the 2023 Southern Challenge in memory of Paul Johannesen.
Favourable winds made for clean two foot sets as Jy Johannesen looked unstoppable all day, carrying that form to a win in the Open Men’s Final whilst Tasmania’s former World Junior Champion Dara Penfold went back to back after taking out the Open Women’s Final.
Both finals were stacked with talent as Johannesen battled 2022 winner Matt Kennedy, Red Herring Pro Am Champion Rudy Davis and Bruny Island Classic king Benn Richardson for the win.
In the Women’s Final, Penfold took on up- and-comers Josie McCann, Ava Carlton and Jasmin McDonald whom pushed the Tassie legend all the way to the final hooter.
