MARRAWAH/TASMANIA (Tuesday, 15th April/2025): This is the one everyone wants to win. The Rip Curl West Coast Classic. And it’s not just any Classic this Easter long weekend, it’s the 50th edition of one of the longest-running surf contests in Australia.
Former World Junior Champion Dara Penfold has won the Open Women’s Title four times. North West steez queen Zoe Grey has walked away with three first-place trophies. Liz Stokely is twice a winner, getting the biscuits in 2020 and 2021. That’s just a few to have graced the Women’s winners trophy.
Famous Tasmanian male surfers like late 90’s/early 2000’s core lord Andy Campbell, Big Wave Legend Tyler Hollmer-Cross, North West Locals Matt Gaby and Jy Johannesen, current Australian Over 45 Men’s Champion Dustin Hollick and goofy style master Kyle Cooper are just a few notable names to have claimed Open Men’s glory. a
Although almost a week away today, the prospect of good waves looks incredibly promising. We all know how quickly the weather can change in Tassie, but let’s dare to dream, and going off current forecasting models, cooking offshore and overhead conditions are currently a reality.
Friday looks like being the pick of the competition window at the moment with offshore winds and well overhead surf most of the day at locations like Greens Beach. The event is mobile and has many good options available. Bluff Reef, the location for that famous Cold Water Classic event back in the day, could be firing. Only time will tell! Sunday looks pretty good as well, with similar-sized waves and light winds.
“We will be doing the scout around from Thursday, hunting for the best combination of winds, good sand and swell for our competitors. Surfing Tasmania endeavours to always put our athletes in the best surf possible. The forecast looks promising, so we can only wait and see what the rest of the week brings,” said former winner and Surfing Tasmania Head of Events, Luke Johannesen.
