WOOLIES ROUND 3 GOES OFF AT RIP CURL WEST COAST CLASSIC
The state’s top junior surfers made the annual trek to Marrawah on Tasmania’s rugged north west coast for Rd 3 of the Woolworths State Junior Championship event. The three day event was rescheduled into two huge exciting days due to a very poor forecast for day 3 Monday, normally finals day.
Day one at Nettley Bay offered sunny cross shore southerly winds with a constant one to one point five metre waves. The surf provided challenges and opportunities for all surfers. The Woolworths Junior Divisions hit the water during the afternoon session for their early rounds as the big crowds of long weekend spectators crammed the car park and viewing areas creating a real amphitheatre.
Sunday dawned with a move to Lighthouse Beach about 10 klm down the road. Surfers were greeted to offshore conditions and one to two metre lefts and rights, certainly enough to satisfy all divisions. The junior rounds and finals were held in the afternoon as the blazing sun again bought crowds of spectators to Lighthouse Beach. Finals day finished with the U18 Boys and Girls Finals. Another great ‘Classic’ came to an end and the crowds slowly left to head for Presentation Night at the Marrawah Hotel.
A wonderful weekend with a great atmosphere around the event and Presentations. Special mention to two special award recipients; Brooke Mason for the Dara Penfold Award and STAS Life Membership to long time Event Director Glenn Saltmarsh.
